The place is nice, well thought, but the latté is just too hot to be good. The milk is burned and is can't be drink right away. A thermometer would probably help.

Our bikes were breaking down: Flat tires and broken spokes. We rode into Courtenay with our fellow Pan American cyclists, Joost and Michiel, looking for warm coffee and a bike shop. On the way into town we asked a local if there was a good place with internet and coffee. He said "Yeah! There's a place just for you guys." Our ears perked up as he told us of a bicycle cafe. Following his directions we rode up on The Broken Spoke. It was like riding into touring cyclist's heaven. There were tables outside with people chatting, a bicycle shop and a coffee shop all wrapped into one.
After we laid our bikes to rest we strolled inside to browse the goods, use the internet and enjoy a beverage. The coffee was the best coffee I've had from Alaska to Courtenay. Discovery, the roaster, is based out of Victoria so everything was extremely fresh. The barista even perfected a beautiful design with the froth of my latte. (See pictures posted).
Devon's back wheel was completely off true and we were a little worried that getting it fixed would require staying put for a day. Mike, co-owner grabbed it and got to work right away. He gave us a mini lesson on how to keep the wheel true ourselves. We rode off fixed up and caffeinated.
Mike and Tamiko, the co-founders, have a great thing going here at The Broken Spoke. They have a vision of Courtenay and the Island being a great place for cyclists. Combining bicycle repairs, gear and great coffee means that cyclists know where to go when they need something done on their bike and know they can hang out, getting to know the fellow cyclists in their area.
